What Is a Blue Mind State?

Blue Mind describes a calm, connected mental state that many people experience when they are near, in, on, or under water. Coined by marine biologist Dr Wallace J. Nichols, the term gives language to a human experience that is ancient, intuitive, and widely shared.

In a Blue Mind state, the nervous system begins to settle. Attention softens. Perspective widens. People often report feeling less rushed, more reflective, and more able to think clearly and creatively. This state doesn’t require extreme experiences or specialist access — it can arise through time spent by the sea, a river, a loch or canal, listening to the sound of water, or remembering and imagining blue spaces.

Blue Mind is not a therapy, diagnosis, or clinical intervention. It is a way of understanding how connection to water supports regulation, reflection, and wellbeing, and why blue spaces matter — socially, culturally, and environmentally — in how we live and lead.
